Match Report
Today’s match report is brought to you by Mark Owen from Take
That who was watching the game from the top of a hill around 5/6ths
of the way up a hill in Chapel le Frith.
“It was a bright sunny day and I awoke to the sounds of the birds chirping and thus decided it would be a good day for hiking. I said to Gary, Howard and Jason “now you can DO WHAT YOU LIKE but I am off up a hill for the day.
I headed to the moors of Chapel le Frith which seemed like a good hiking location. After a few hours I overheard a game of football from yonder. I pulled out my Binoculars just in time to catch the kick off. It turned out to be a game between the Manchester Stingers WFC and Buxton WFC, a real treat. Now I won’t make any PROMISES but I will try and give you an accurate account of the game.
It seemed like EVERYTHING CHANGES for the Stingers line up but it turned out to be just two. Shelly came in for Gwen at the back and Joe replaced Rachel on the wing.
There was some Initial good play for the stingers in the first few minutes with some good wing play from Katie and Jinny but soon the play went to Buxton. Stingers looked a bit Scrappy and Buxton got the first goal. A cross from the Buxton Winger and the Buxton Stringer struck in to the net just past Jane’s outstretched arm. Never mind Jane you were a bit unsighted from the sun SHINE.
The goal gave stingers some great incentive to fight back and they started playing a lot better with some better passing moves in midfield. On 20 minutes a good ball in from Jinny from the wing connected with Vicky’s head and the downward header was too well placed for the Keeper to get a hand too and made the scores 1-1. I was pleased for the stingers and Ii felt for a moment like I FOUND HEAVEN. Vicky’s parents who watched from the sideline shouted TAKE THAT AND PARTY they did for the next few minutes.
There was a lot of Stingers play and Joe found herself in the box but shot over the bar. More great hold up play from Liz gave the midfield time to play the ball around well.
A few minutes later and another good bit of build up play through Irish Nic ( yes she is Irish ) and Scouse ( although Liz is more Scouse than Scouse) saw a good through ball to Vicky who shot just wide of the post after the she had the keeper beat from a cheeky Lob.
There was a crunching 50/50 tackle from Kerry that I will NEVER FORGET, luckily nobody was hurt and the game ensued. Another chance fell to Vicky who after beating a couple of the Buxton Defence shot just wide.
A few minutes to half time and Buxton got a break down the stingers left wing, the cross beating the stingers defence fell to the Buxton Striker. She shot and I was SURE it was on its way in but luckily it hit the post and Jane was able to gather it up.
Half Time and it was time to RELIGHT MY FIRE as it started to get a bit nippy. The Fire was lit and I poured myself a cup of tea from my flask and sucked on a Werthers Original as the Second half began.
The game started a bit scrappy and the Stingers were UNDER PRESSURE (whoops that’s a queen song). Some great defending from the Nippy Rhianne held off the Buxton strikers. Shelly hopefully BACK FOR GOOD in the team played like an oak in defence winning many headers and making some important clearances. The ball just wasn’t running well for the stingers and Scouse and Nic couldn’t seem to get control of the midfield. We just needed to get that ball crossed into Vicky’s golden head.
Buxton created more chances in the second half but nothing too worrying for the Stingers Defence and a bit of forward play from the stingers saw jinny in a good position to score but she couldn’t get her head to the ball.
PATIENCE is the key and i was sure that the 3 points were not lost. Time for a Substitute and Rachel Taylor replaced Joe on the wing. The fresh legs made all the difference and Rach was straight into the thick of the action and a great left footed cross into the box was just out of reach of Liz.
The last 20 minutes saw stingers take control of the game and I thought IT ONLY TAKES A MINUTE to score a goal. Gwen came on to replace
More chances for the Stingers and it looked like Buxton were settling for the draw. A good bit of play down the right wing saw the Stingers with a corner. Liz stepped up to take it and all I could do was PRAY that this was the moment. A brilliant strong bending Corner found its way into the Box, BUT, what’s that is it Vickys head running towards the ball. THWACK and Vicky makes a perfect headed connection to see the ball fly past the dumbstruck keeper into the top corner of the net. COULD IT BE MAGIC or could it be that Vicky has been practising headers in her bedroom with a rolled up sock, well done BABE.
2-1 and all we needed to do was hold on to the 3 points. Liz was replaced by Gwen for the last few minutes and again the fresh legs helped. Stingers kept possession down the line and waited for the time to pass and that was it full time. A great away result and now WE CAN RULE THE WORLD, well at least rule the NW woman’s regional division 1 south until the end of the season.
It was time for me to pack up and douse the fire before heading back down the MANCUNIAN WAY to see what Gary, Jason and Howard had been up to all day. I looked around the surrounding peaks before me and thought ITS A BEAUTIFUL WORLD.
